Exploring Cat Blood Pressure: Testing Across Generations

As part of our ongoing passion for animal welfare and our cats' health and wellbeing, we recently embarked on a project to answer a fascinating question: Does the presence of different color genes, breeding activity levels, gender, or age affect blood pressure in British Shorthair and Longhair cats?

Testing Across Three Generations

To explore this, we tested over 40 cats from three generations of our feline family, representing a wide and diverse sample pool of genealogies. This comprehensive approach allowed us to gain deeper insights into any potential genetic or lifestyle factors that might influence blood pressure health. It’s an essential step in ensuring that our cats remain healthy across all lineages.

How the Blood Pressure Test Works

The blood pressure test we use is a non-invasive method conducted with an oscillometric blood pressure monitoring device. The procedure involves placing a BP cuff around the cat’s forelimb, which is automatically inflated. The device then measures blood pressure through the oscillometric method, detecting pressure waves in the artery when occluded by the cuff. Along with blood pressure, this method also enables the measurement of the cat’s heart rate.

It’s important to note that the cats were neither medicated nor under anesthesia during the test, ensuring that their natural, stress-free state provided accurate data for our research.

The results from this project have provided invaluable insights into the relationship between genetics, lifestyle factors, and blood pressure health in cats. We are thrilled with how this study is helping us understand the wellbeing of our feline companions on a deeper level.
